About the Art: Poro Dan Mask
This Dan Mask was carved by an initiated male member of the Poro society for purposes of initiation into adulthood and when seeking to communicate with the spirits when he is seeking wisdom and guidance.
Before it was carved, as is customary, the male having cleansed himself, sets off into the forest to find a suitable piece of wood to use for the mask carving. The Poro society believes that the ancestral spirits live in tree branches and therefore certain protocols must be observed before felling the tree.
It is said that the mask allows for a mystical experience of god and ancestors. It has sent its male dancer into deep trances, taking him into the world of the spirits. It's also believed to bring protection to its owner.
